The ventilator is not even in the room anymore - HALLELUJAH!! Mrs. Butkuss is reading his cards to him, and he is responding a little bit more and more. I don't know when they will try and seal off the trach to try to progress with eating, speaking, etc. but Mrs. Butkuss did bring him his glasses and he has been presented with a shirt with the AU-UA score on it. :D

His address is:
North Alabama Specialty Hospital
700 West Market Street
2 South Room 247

Butkuss went home yesterday, and that is nothing short of a miracle. Please be advised, however, that this news must be viewed in light of some other issues. He is still dependent on a feeding tube and trach. The situation is very formidable for his wife to manage the equipment and help him with other functions. Hopefully she can obtain some help with all this, but I think that right now she is it. Please continue to remember both of them in prayers.

Lord please be with that family. Too much pain in the last two years than anyone should be asked to bear.

I drove to Florence yesterday, as my wife and I visited at Butkuss' home. There is a huge difference in living and lingering, and sadly he is just lingering. His eyes are open, but he is unable to be aware of surroundings, and I was tearful to see him in this condition. His wife Paula is a courageous warrior who is by his side and providing him with wonderful care. How long can he exist like this is now the only question to be answered for his situation. Another question, however, is how long can Paula keep this up without suffering a catastrophic health consequence herself? As heartbreaking as it is to say, maybe the shorter the time left, the better.
