Urgent Prayer Request - Butkuss

Butkuss is being moved to the Athens hospital this week. They will work to try and get him off the ventilator. The unit there has a remarkable success record in weaning patients off the vent. If successful, he will then be worked with in respiratory and other areas. His vitals are stable, and he has actually been able to breathe on his own for a couple of hours at a time. Blood count results have been surprisingly good. Awareness and responsiveness still lag in what is hoped for, but maybe ventilator removal will help. All in all this is still a VERY serious situation.
Continue prayers PLEASE!

Thanks for the continued updates, SU DOG.

While obviously still serious, it sounds like he is improving. I am thankful for that.

More about Mrs. Butkuss today. She was in route to visit Butkuss when outside of Florence she hit a deer. She was able to get back home and get a rental car to continue to Athens where our friend is now. He is at North Alabama Specialty Hospital. Hope for more status info soon.

Still working to try to get Butkuss off the ventilator, and this might be the day, as good progress has been made up to this point. PT folks said that they sat him up on the edge of the bed for 5 minutes yesterday, and frankly that is quite a huge positive accomplishment. He had developed pneumonia, but that seems to be under control at this point. Other indicators are all good at this time.

There is still a concern of course about ventilator dependency. Most of you probably know that sometimes a person's body has trouble breathing again after being on the device for long periods of time. If Butkuss can successfully overcome this dependency, then that will be a MAJOR step forward. After that then speech and cognitive issues will be evaluated. I hope good news will be forthcoming, but please understand that he is FAR from being out of the woods yet. As always Mrs. Butkuss asks for continued prayers.

Continued prayers. Hope somebody has the Iron Bowl highlights cued up on their phone when he's stable enough to watch them.

Physical therapy doesn't work on the week-ends, but all news is good news from the medical perspective as of last night. Butkuss was taken off the ventilator and has remained off for 24+ hours. His respiration rate was taken and was good, so he appears able to breathe well on his own. Other vitals remain good. The vent will be on stand-by in case needed, but he may be able to remain free of it - we will see. Other tubes remain for feeding. Mrs. Butkuss has said that he has been more responsive to her with an occasional grin. She also stated that some of his ignoring her is from past habits that is nothing new.

Please keep in mind that news in this fragile situation can go from good(which we are so thankful for)to bad at any time. By this I mean that great progress has been made, but there is still a delicate balance, and much ground yet to cover. Continue to pray for Butkuss and don't forget to include his wonderful wife Paula. This certainly won't be the Christmas that they had expected.
