A Look At VMI

A Look At VMI

This is a hungry team on the cusp of breaking through for a SoCon win. They have lost their last 3 SoCon games by a total of 15 points.
VMI is also a VERY young team, with 56 of the 86 players on their roster being Fr. or Soph. They have only 8 seniors total. Against us they plan to start only 3 upperclasmen on offense and 4 on defense. VMI has 5 players from the State of Alabama, although none from the B'ham area.

Defensively - The Keydets are fairly strong against the run, even after losing some real talent from last year at the LB position. IMO, their speed in the secondary is still somewhat suspect. I also don't see Hodges having to hurry on his passes, so the obvious conclusions can be drawn from that. They are a disciplined team, but may still lack the talent to cover good WRs.

Offense - What you may not know is that THEIR QB just set a SoCon passing record. :o The record is for the most passing yardage in consecutive games with 925 yards. That record was formerly held by Scott Riddle of Elon, who some of us remember very well. VMI's Reece Udinski is currently passing the ball over 70 times/game. We will see a SoCon offense that is the most like ours - the VMI Air-Raid Attack. What we need to do is put pressure on Udinski. While the WRs are not blazing fast, they run nice routes, and he is pretty accurate if he has time.

Special Teams - Their punter is outstanding and they have a little returner that can really scoot.

Info is my opinion, and definitely subject for additions/corrections.

VMI stays in a state of being young. Can't keep kids. Oh, and get comfy, these 2 teams lead league in offensive plays run per game, using conference stats only.
