Ranking SoCon Football Recruiting

This list has nothing to do with stars, but is based on what offers were made to the prospects. Unlike in years past, we seem to be near the bottom, with only Western and the military schools below us. Telling or irrelevant? I guess that time will tell.

if this turns out to be accurate, we are in trouble. Hatcher's recruiting skills need to exceed his team and player development skills for us to have a chance to be successful.

Insightful comment. Hatcher has had teams loaded with talent in the past and found a way to lose to teams at the bottom of the conference standings. He has the ability to beat the best team in the league and not show up for the last place team. Inconsistency is his consistency. We are entering the season without a clear starting qb. Neither of the qbs who played demonstrated an ability to read defenses and deliver accurate passes to receivers in tight spaces on a consistent basis. The defense was simply abysmal. So what isn’t there to be optimistic about? A new offensive coordinator and a new defensive staff leave even more questions going into the season. I do not know what to expect, but Hatcher has a long way to go to win me over that he can turn this program into something.

We were 3rd from the top in yards per play allowed on defense. 3rd from the bottom in yards per play on offense. Last in the league in turnovers allowed. Last in the league, by quite some margin in TOP. Our defense had issues, but it was a much more efficient unit than the offense. And the issues they had were complicated by an offense that could not hold onto the ball. Using league games, the offense was dead last in yards per play gained. Defense was 2nd in the league. But yeah, running off your best coaches/evaluators/recruiters is a bold move, let's see if it pays off for him.

We can get too caught up in the weeds if we are not careful though. Above all else, You win games by scoring points and keeping your opponents from scoring points. While I realize that our offensive philosophy places our defense at a disadvantage, the fact is you simply are not going to win many games with a defense that gives up 38 ppg (even if your offense averages 32 ppg). This is evidenced too by the fact that Wofford and Furman, the two best teams in our conference, led the conference in scoring defense while bottom tier schools like WCU,and SU were at the bottom. Again, I recognize that our offensive philosophy is indirectly related to our gory defensive numbers and that altering our offensive style could very well have positive defensive benefits, but the fact remains that our defense did not perform at a level that was sufficient for us to win enough ball games. We were seventh in the conference in scoring defense, but second in scoring offense. Our defensive standing in the league is more aligned with where we finished overall in the standings. Additionally our pass defense was poor (see the TTU game) and our rushing defense was weak (see the FU game if you have the stomach for it).

Hatcher relies on outscoring his opponents to win and it is difficult to envision him departing from that philosophy. He doesn't need a great defense to win ball games, but he needs one that can be competitive. Our defense last year was not competitive.

Indirectly?? When evaluating, efficiency is much more important than scoring. Just because you run alot of plays on offense, doesn't mean you are good at it. The Furman game was no bueno. But, weak rush defense? WE LEAD THE LEAGUE IN YARDS ALLOWED PER RUSH. But when you face 97 rush plays in game like we did against Citadel, it's going to do a little more than indirectly effect your defense. I think it's hard to be better than first. Not competetive? We beat the team that won the league. We scored 21 points in that game.

I'm not giving the defense a pass. When you consistently have your opponent in 3d and long and you give up a first down to extend the drive, that's not the offenses fault. The defense was often stifling on first and second down and non-existent on 3d down. When the other team wanted to pass, there wasn't much standing in the way of a completion. 03, I have a lot of respect for your opinions, but your theory that the number of defensive plays is all on the offense is not correct. That said, we had way too many three and outs on offense. I don't care if you run the plays fast or slow, 3 and out as consistently as we were 3 and out isn't acceptable.

As I have said, we had our issues defensively. Pass defense and 3rd down defense were two of them. But, to think that we weren't competitive defensively and that we were weak against the run just isn't accurate. Also, to think that an offense that is near the bottom in yards per play gained, leads the league in turnovers, and is last in TOP only indirectly affects your defense is also inaccurate, IMO. Bill Dottavio more than deserved an opportunity to get those issues corrected. But, hey we've finally gotten rid of the last coaches on staff that were around the one and only time we won the league and graduated virtually every player signed, while putting players in the league, so let's see how that works out.
