BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford volleyball team announced Tuesday the signing of Alabama native Chelsi Carter to the 2011 roster. Carter will join Michaela Reesor, Amanda Moritz and Selina Schirmer as a part of the 2011 signing class.

Carter is a 5-9 libero/defensive specialist from Meridianville, Ala. She comes out of Hazel Green High School where she was a four-time All-County and All-Area selection. She was named the All-County Most Valuable Player as a junior and a senior and was also named All-State honorable mention as a junior. Carter also plays for the Rocket City Volleyball Club.

Most recently, Carter was voted onto the North team for the AHSAA North-Star Volleyball Stars. She was also named Athlete of the Week by D1 Sports Training, The Orthopedic Center and the Huntsville Times. She was also nominated for the Wendy's Heisman Athlete of the Month.

Carter tallied the most digs on her team as a freshman and a sophomore, and was selected to the All-Elite Team by the Huntsville Times as a junior.

As a freshman, she was named to the All-Tournament team at the Scottsboro Invitational, and as a sophomore, she was named All-Tournament at the Muscles Shoals Invitational. She also earned All-Tournament Team honors all four years at the Austin Invitational.

She also played basketball at Hazel Green and was named All-County and All-Area as a sophomore.

"Chelsi may become the hidden gem of all 2011 SoCon recruits," Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. "She is a player that wants to coach one day and is a fierce competitor and a student of the game. On her visits to our matches, her focus on how we were warming up was so intense. With a knack for finding the ball, a great touch and a fabulous hand on the ball, Chelsi will be a back row force and a sneaky offensive weapon for Samford volleyball for the next four years."
